Seekr FAQ
Seekr is an internet technology company that prioritizes transparency and empowers user choice and control by streamlining access to reliable information. Current services include an independent search engine, powered by proprietary AI technology, which evaluates information and presents a Seekr Score and Political Lean Indicator.
Seekr is committed to giving everyone access to technology that simplifies the search for reliable information online. We are committed to giving you choice and control over how you search, view information, and share data.
Misleading information surrounds us - some monopolies manipulate search results prioritizing ad revenue over you and your data; social media filter bubbles magnify misinformation, often allowing erroneous content to rise to the top of search results.
Seekr wants the internet to be better than that. Seekr lets you find the information you're looking for, allowing you to make informed decisions about your life and the world around you.
We built our own index because we believe in transparency, reliability, choice, and control. Our index provides a more neutral and broad view than other search engines that may manipulate results to serve an agenda. We strive to always provide the most relevant results, and every result is evaluated with a Seekr Score. (That said, we may sometimes include third-party search results to make sure people get the best answer to their query.) With Seekr, you can view articles across the political spectrum, and the Political Lean Indicator identifies any stance a story may have.
We use a proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) that indexes thousands of websites and top news sources using natural language processing. Seekr takes a search query and uses machine learning algorithms to find errors and assess the reliability and its political lean. The platform then generates a rating of the site, the author, and/or the content, so you know the quality of the information, and its lean before you click on it. To learn more, go to How it Works.
No - Seekr takes a unique approach to reduce bias. By using AI, we greatly reduce the errors and biases that can occur when relying on human scoring. This systematic approach to content evaluation, combined with our independent index, ensures that content is evaluated equally, and the scoring is consistent. In addition, we are transparent with the judging criteria used, so it's easy to understand how the Seekr Score and Political Lean are calculated. To learn more, go to How it Works
For each news search result, we use AI to analyze the reliability of the information, adherence to journalistic principles, and general reliability of the author and domain source. Each aspect of our Seekr Score is carefully researched and designed with the help of crowdsourcing, subject matter panels, user feedback, blind annotations, and statistical matching.
It is designed to help you evaluate and compare news, so you can make informed decisions about the information you consume. By clicking on the Seekr Score you can see the criteria the AI system used to calculate each score. To learn more, go to How it Works
The Seekr Score is designed to review how news and information may change over time as new data emerges. We work to constantly improve our methodology, and at times, a score may be adjusted.
Currently, Seekr only focuses on U.S. sources that are available in English. We understand there is a need for information reliability and transparency in other countries and languages, and we hope to expand.
The Seekr Political Lean Indicator utilizes advanced machine learning to detect the presence of a Political Lean within a specific article by extracting and deeply analyzing the text looking for the stance of the article.
The Seekr Political Lean gives you the ability to filter information so you can have the full picture.
It is easy to state a particular website always leans left or right, however, at Seekr we believe the right approach to reduce bias and overgeneralization is to analyze the exact content of an article. It is common to see Op-Eds, contributor pieces, or opinion articles that lean away from how people believe a publication typically reports.
To ensure trust, we believe all machine-learning systems need to be explainable and transparent. In the context of political lean detection, the system must have the ability to provide evidence as to why an article exhibits a certain lean. Examples of such evidence could be that the article is “pro-life” or “pro-choice.” To achieve this confidence, ongoing automated and manual testing is employed to ensure accurate lean detection, prevent bias or inaccurate drifts in the model. We achieve this through techniques such as:
- Comprehensive testing and blind studies: we ask a wide range of people to evaluate the predictions of our systems by “hiding” information which may lead to bias or opinion (such as the originating domain or author); that way we only consider and analyze the content of the article.
- Specific machine-learning architectures that will not result in “black-box” results, but instead outputs that are easily explainable.
- Meticulous testing models for biases against the entire library of articles. To learn more, go to How it Works
Seekr will analyze every news article. Those where political content is detected will be scored through the Political Lean Indicator. Seekr does not attempt to detect political lean within non-political articles.
If the text extracted from an article is too short, we do not analyze for a political lean. To do so would lead to a prediction of political lean without enough confidence to be correct or trusted by our users. Reasons for short text can include:
- Short breaking stories with no details (i.e., Breaking: Gunshots heard on Capitol Hill, awaiting details)
- Paywall protected websites that require a subscription
- Pages that are too complex to automatically extract text
- The page is primarily a video or image slideshow. Seekr does not process media directly from pages when attempting to score or determine a political lean.
- Non-English sites are not yet rated
- We do not factor tweets, videos, and photos into an article's analysis
In the future, Seekr will display keyword-targeted ads on the search engine. We will not target ads based on a profile composed of your search browsing history that was captured without your consent. Should you wish to be targeted with more personalized ads, Seekr will only do so with your consent.
Seekr only gathers information from the interactions (searches, queries, clicks, etc.) taking place on our site, and we only collect information that helps us better serve your search needs. We don't share or sell your data.
Pixels placed on Seekr.com help us track our marketing efforts by showing how people found us (for example, if a person arrived at our site by clicking on a social media link).
